Plans - aims and starting points

So here is a little more about what I plan to create and investigate in more depth from the previous post's inspiration starting point.

My aim is to explore various nordic cultures and reinterpreting the tradtional folk patterns to create textured patterns on knit textiles for use in accessories.I intend to explore creating illustrative and textured patterns through designs and motifs made of various marking styles and the layering of serveral different marks. By developing a bricolage working practice, I will explore the two paradigms of nordic cultures and textured mark patterns through use of a multi-method, collage based practice in my prepratory sketching and combining textile techniques through use of print and embroidery on knit. Through a phenomenological approach, I plan to investigate paintings and pattern designs from various traditions to understand colour palettes and commons symbols and motifs. In conjuction to the exploration of folk patterns, I will investigate paintings and illustrations created using various mark making styles.

As it relates to my studio textiles practice, I will be exploring:

  • creating visually textured patterns through colourwork patterns comprised of shapes or motifs made of various marking styles and the layering of serveral different marks
  • creating literal textured patterns by physically texturising pattern through use of print and embroidery on knit
  • creating mark-making textures to translate aspects of these cultures giving a depth and character to a motif or design.
